Chapter 34

Above the tall buildings of Denver’s cityscape, the night sky yawned — a black mouth full of stars.

Benally led the way to his car, and Loshak followed. The detective explained as they jogged.

“A uniform making the rounds spotted a disturbance in the tent city outside the old Kmart. Couple guys hollering and shouting. I guess these things usually resolve themselves pretty fast out there, so she called it in as she drove by, figures she’ll circle back later and check up on things. But Washburn heard the call come in, and he remembered you two were doing your undercover canvas today. So she goes back, but the guys making the ruckus are gone, and of course nobody there is saying boo about it.”

Loshak yanked the door open and dropped into the passenger seat. His mind was going a hundred miles a minute, circling back to how he should’ve made Spinks take his phone, staying in character be damned. It sure as hell wasn’t doing any good sitting in the cup holder in the rental.

Benally’s car was unmarked, but he pulled out a suction-cupped LED dash light and lit it up before swerving into traffic.

“How long ago did the call come in?” Loshak asked.

“Ten to fifteen minutes ago.”

Loshak’s stomach sank. A lot could happen in that much time.

But worrying about what might have gone down wasn’t going to find Spinks. He had to focus on the most efficient way to search for a missing person.

Start at the last known point. They were already speeding toward the encampment, Benally’s lips pressed in a tight line as he squeezed the car through the gap left in the evening traffic.

The uniform had already presumably searched the tent city itself. They had to spread out, widen their search area.

“Get me a block away from the Kmart, and let me out,” Loshak said.

Benally shot him a sidelong glance before returning his eyes to the road.

“You sure about that?”

“There’ll be places a car can’t get into. You cruise around the block, and then drop back another block. Move in concentric rings, keeping your eye out. I’ll do the same, but focusing on alleys and the backs of buildings.”

The diner was less than a mile from the tent city, but at the moment, it felt much farther away.

Benally pulled cautiously through a red light, making sure they weren’t going to get T-boned, then gunned the engine again.

“Plenty of abandoned lots around here, too. Don’t forget to take a look in those. Never know if he might’ve gotten hurt and crawled into one. Had something like that last year with an informant. Didn’t find his body for a week.”

The detective swung around a turn and shrugged his shoulders before he went on.

“Guess that’s not very cheerful, but I’d feel like shit if I didn’t mention it and, y’know, something like that happened here.”

“Understood.”

“We’re pretty close now. Let me get past…”

He trailed off as he veered around a bus and didn’t pick the thread up again. A block later, he hit the blinker and pulled onto a side street.
